Will Chinese Baseball Make It to the American Big Leagues?

The field took just four months to build amid the high-rise apartment blocks on the outskirts of Changzhou, an anonymous second-tier city about 100 miles west of Shanghai in eastern China. Then, in this Chinese version of Field of Dreams, came the players, each with a nickname bestowed by their American coach, Rick Dell: V.B., or Volleyball Boy, a lanky 14-year-old from Jiangsu province whose mother was a volleyball player; Xiao (Little) Baby Ruth, the pudgy catcher and joker of the team; and Tony, who Dell says "looks like a little Italian guy" from far away.

If all goes according to plan, Xiao Baby Ruth or Tony may one day be playing for the Red Sox or Yankees in major league baseball. It may sound far-fetched, but watching these middle and high school kids make running catches in the outfield and throw fastballs upwards of 82 m.p.h., it's not totally inconceivable. The Changzhou development center, which opened in September, is MLB's second training school in China that aims to produce players who might one day have a shot at the majors or, more realistically, China's national baseball league. But finding the Yao Ming of baseball isn't the only objective. MLB is also desperate to bring back a sport that was wiped out during the Cultural Revolution and make it as popular in China today as it is in Japan and Korea. (Read about baseball dreams in the Dominican Republic.)

This may be difficult, given that America's favorite pastime is still relatively unknown in China, with only about 4 million players, compared with the estimated 300 million who play basketball. But MLB officials are optimistic, largely because of the success of the sport across Asia, particularly in Japan, Korea and Taiwan. Baseball has a long history in China too. The game was introduced to the country over a century ago by Chinese students returning home from Yale University. Mao Zedong banned it during the Cultural Revolution ? unlike his beloved basketball ? but it re-emerged after his death, eventually leading to the formation of the professional China Baseball League in 2002. In recent years, China has also made steady progress on the international stage, getting a hugely gratifying ? and high-profile ? victory over rival Taiwan at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Jim Small, the Tokyo-based vice president of MLB Asia, believes baseball is well suited to Chinese culture. An official once told him that, were he around, Confucius himself might be a fan. "There's a lot of Confucian ideas in the game of baseball. It's the only real team sport where there's no clock. It's about sacrifice. It's one of the few times where you actually sacrifice yourself for the better of the team," Small says. China also takes immense pride in excelling in sports it's not supposed to. Remember Li Na's victory at the French Open? "Ten years ago, people thought you're not going to have Chinese sprinters or Chinese swimmers, and now they're the best of the world in those (sports), so why not baseball?" Small says. (See the 10 worst MLB stars.)

Still, MLB officials admit it will take time to increase the visibility of a sport as nuanced as baseball. The long-term strategy has been a grassroots approach. MLB has introduced baseball to 120 elementary schools in five cities through a program called Play Ball!, with an annual nationwide tournament for the best schools in the spring. It also started a traveling baseball theme park that toured 20 cities this year, attracting some 2.5 million visitors. And a Mandarin-language version of This Week in Baseball, a weekly MLB-highlights show in the U.S., is now broadcast on eight regional Chinese networks.

But bolstering the sport's popularity may ultimately depend upon producing a Chinese star, says Leon Xie, managing director of MLB China. "It's called the Yao Ming effect," he says. "You get your superstar, then you get your fan base, and then that will get us closer to our ultimate goal ? to get baseball back to the country." This is why the MLB training center in Changzhou and another in nearby Wuxi, which was set up in 2009, are so important.

When MLB opened its Wuxi center, it recruited players locally and had to start with the basics. "The first time most kids had been on a baseball field was the first day we had practice," says Dell, who was head baseball coach at the College of New Jersey for 27 years before moving to China to oversee the development program. Two years later, officials were able to travel the country to scout talent for the Changzhou center, recruiting youngsters from as far away as Qinghai province in the west, where the game is popular among Tibetans, to Guangdong province in the south and Beijing in the north. "There are independent pockets of baseball that are popping up ... that are being initiated by interested individuals who might be Korean or Chinese Americans or Americans," Dell says. "What we've started to do is connect the dots."

The progress in Changzhou has been quick ? and the players' enthusiasm is palpable. After class on a recent weekday, the 20 boys in the program hit the field wearing bright blue and red jerseys, black Nike cleats and caps from different MLB teams for their weekly in-house game. The red team strikes first, scoring two runs on an overthrown ball to first, but the blue team rallies in its final at bat. After one batter safely reaches base ? prompting his teammate to yell "Safe!" in English ? Bama, a 14-year-old Tibetan player from Qinghai, steps to the plate. He cracks the ball to the outfield and sprints to first as his teammates go nuts in the dugout. The comeback is short-lived, though. The light is fading, and Dell calls the game.

Bama, whose nickname sounds like his Tibetan name, Huadan Banma, says afterward that he started playing only three years ago and that his dream is to one day make it to MLB like his idol, Alex Rodriguez. "If I can succeed, I want to earn lots of money that I can use to help others," he says quietly. But even if there aren't any future major leaguers on the field today, Dell says, baseball is making inroads. "We've done things slowly and deliberately," he says. "We wanted to do real things. What you see here is a real thing."

IN THE NEWS: WOMAN USES FACEBOOK FOR HELP AFTER BEING TAKEN HOSTAGE

Last Update on December 27, 2011 03:06 EST

IN THE NEWS: CHRISTMAS-DAY SHOPPING ON THE RISE

NEW YORK (AP) -- So much for Christmas being a time to spend with

family and friends, relaxing under the glow of a lighted tree. A

growing number of people spent the day near a glow, all right -- but

it was the glow of their computer, laptop, tablet or smartphone

screen -- searching out bargains. IBM finds that online shopping

jumped 16.4 percent on Christmas Day, compared to last year. And

the IBM report says the dollar amount of those purchases made using

mobile devices was up a whopping 173 percent. And the trend seems

to have continued into the day after Christmas. Yesterday

afternoon, shopping was up 10 percent over the same day last year.

IN THE NEWS: WOMAN USES FACEBOOK FOR HELP AFTER BEING TAKEN HOSTAGE

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Police in Utah say a woman turned to

Facebook to get help after she and her toddler son were held

hostage for nearly five days. Authorities say the woman hid in a

closet with a laptop to post a plea for help on the social

networking web site. The woman alerted people that she and her

17-month-old son would be "dead by morning" if someone didn't

help. Someone did -- the post prompted calls to police who went to

the home to check on the woman. Police arrested a man and have

booked him for investigation of aggravated kidnapping, forcible

sodomy, aggravated assault, domestic violence, child abuse, animal

cruelty and other charges.

Obamas celebrate with troops (Politico)

KANEOHE BAY, Hawaii ? President Barack Obama expressed his gratitude Sunday to troops gathered here for Christmas dinner, taking photos and offering greetings to Marines and their families.

?Merry Christmas, everybody,? the president said as he and first lady Michelle Obama entered the mess at Anderson Hall on Marine Corps Base Hawaii.

Visiting troops on the base has become an annual tradition for the Obamas, who have stopped by the meal each Christmas since Obama was president-elect.

The president and first lady made their way around the room slowly, offering ?Merry Christmas,? ?Mele Kalikimaka? and at least one ?Feliz Navidad.?

Obama posed with plenty of children, including one 8-month-old boy who stuck his fingers into the president?s mouth.

?What?s goin? on, man? How ya doin??? the president asked Cooper Wall Wagner before hoisting the baby into his arms.

Baby Cooper, wearing a red sweater vest, and red, white and blue plaid shorts, reached for the president?s nose before sticking some of his fingers into the president?s mouth. ?See that big nose and say, ?I want some of that big nose,?? it sounded like Obama said.

On Christmas Eve, Obama also paid tribute to the troops, calling 10 members of the military ? two from each branch ? ?to wish them a happy holiday and thank them for their service,? principal deputy press secretary Josh Earnest said.

The president?s tributes to the troops after a decade of war come just a week after the final U.S. combat troops left Iraq, and as the drawdown of the troop surge in Afghanistan has gotten under way.

The first family began the day by exchanging gifts around 8 a.m. They had breakfast and sang Christmas carols before heading to holiday services at the base?s chapel. The White House didn?t say what gifts were exchanged, but the president went shopping this week in Northern Virginia and bought ?Just Dance 3? and ?The Sims 3 Pets,? plus two $50 iTunes gift cards, for daughters Malia and Sasha.

After church, the first family spent a few midday hours at home ? carefully coinciding with the Chicago Bulls?s 88-87 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers ? before the president and first lady returned to the base to greet troops.

The Obamas planned to have Christmas dinner together at home on Sunday night.

2012 NFL Mock Draft: CBS Sports Has Texans Taking Dontari Poe In The First Round

More 2012 NFL mock drafts are starting to come out and the latest comes from CBS Sports' draft guru Rob Rang. Rang projects the Texans will be picking late in the first round at No. 26, and he has them taking Memphis Tiger nose/defensive tackle Dontari Poe:

No. 26 Houston Texans: Dontari Poe, DT, Memphis: The Texans have emerged as one of the NFL's best teams, but run defense remains a concern as the team doesn't have a dominant nose guard. Poe, at 6-5 and 350 pounds, possesses a rare combination of size, strength and athleticism and would surely intrigue the Texans and any other teams in search of a nose guard, should he leave Memphis early.

Frankincense, Christmas staple, 'doomed': Scientists

If fire, grazing and insect attack, the most likely causes of decline, remain unchecked, then?frankincense?production could be doomed altogether.

Trees that produce frankincense, a fragrant resin used in incense and perfumes and a central part of the Christmas story, are declining so fast that production could be halved over the next 15 years, scientists said on Wednesday.

In a study published in the British Ecological Society's Journal of Applied Ecology, ecologists from the Netherlands and Ethiopia looked at large-scale field studies and predicted that tree numbers could decline by 90 percent in the next 50 years.

If fire, grazing and insect attack, the most likely causes of decline, remain unchecked, then frankincense production could be doomed altogether, they warned.

Frankincense, best known in religious teachings as one of the gifts laid before the newborn Messiah, is obtained by tapping various species of Boswellia, a small, deciduous tree that grows across Africa from northern Nigeria to the highlands of Ethiopia and Eritrea.

Cutting the Boswellia's bark produces the frankincense resin, a white substance with a strong, sweet smell. The resin is burnt in churches, mosques and at ceremonies, as well as being used by the perfume industry and in herbal medicines.

Despite its economic importance, incense has been traded internationally for thousands of years, little is known about how tapping affects Boswellia populations.

Working in an isolated part of northwest Ethiopia near the source of the Blue Nile, a research team led by Frans Bongers of Wageningen University in the Netherlands studied 13 two-hectare plots, some where trees were tapped for frankincense and some where they were untapped.

Over two years, they monitored survival, growth and seed production of more than 6,000 Boswellia trees and used the data to build mathematical models to predict the fate of Boswellia populations in coming years. The forecasts suggest Boswellia populations are declining so dramatically that frankincense production could be halved in the next 15 years.

"Current management of Boswellia populations is clearly unsustainable," Bongers said in a statement. "Our models show that within 50 years, populations of Boswellia will be decimated, and the declining populations mean frankincense production is doomed."

The researchers found that all the Boswellia populations they studied are declining, not only those from tapped trees, a finding that suggests factors other than tapping are at the root of the problem.

Bongers said the main causes of the trees' decline are likely to be burning, grazing and attack by the long-horn beetle, which lays its eggs under the Boswellia's bark.

The scientists urged local authorities to introduce better management incentives to ensure farmers work harder to protect Boswellia trees. In the short-term this meant preventing fires and beetle attack, Bongers said, but in the longer-term, large areas should be set aside and protected for five to 10 years to allow Boswellia saplings to become established.

Unprovoked attacks at heart of 'Knockout King'

In this Dec. 15, 2011 photo, Matt Quain poses for a portrait in St. Louis. In this Dec. 15, 2011 photo, Matt Quain poses for a portrait in St. Louis. Quain still struggles to piece together what happened after a recent trip to the grocery store nearly turned deadly when he was the victim of a brutal attack generally known as "Knockout King" or simply "Knock Out," a so-called game of unprovoked violence that targets random victims. (AP Photo/Jeff Roberson)

(AP) ? Matthew Quain still struggles to piece together what happened after a trip to the grocery store nearly turned deadly. He remembers a group of loitering young people, a dimly lit street ? then nothing. The next thing he knew he was waking up with blood pouring out of his head.

The 51-year-old pizza kitchen worker's surreal experience happened just before midnight earlier this year, when he became another victim of what is generally known as "Knockout King" or simply "Knock Out," a so-called game of unprovoked violence that targets random victims.

Scattered reports of the game have come from around the country including Massachusetts, New Jersey and Chicago. In St. Louis, the game has become almost contagious, with tragic consequences. An elderly immigrant from Vietnam died in an attack last spring.

The rules of the game are as simple as they are brutal. A group ? usually young men or even boys as young as 12, and teenage girls in some cases ? chooses a lead attacker, then seeks out a victim. Unlike typical gang violence or other street crime, the goal is not revenge, nor is it robbery. The victim is chosen at random, often a person unlikely to put up a fight. Many of the victims have been elderly. Most were alone.

The attacker charges at the victim and begins punching. If the victim goes down, the group usually scatters. If not, others join in, punching and kicking the person, often until he or she is unconscious or at least badly hurt. Sometimes the attacks are captured on cellphone video that is posted on websites.

"These individuals have absolutely no respect for human life," St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay said.

Slay knows firsthand. He was on his way home from a theater around 11:30 p.m. on Oct. 21 when he saw perhaps a dozen young people casually crossing a street. He looked to the curb and saw Quain sprawled on the pavement.

Slay told his driver to pull over. They found Quain unconscious, blood pouring from his head and mouth.

Quain was hospitalized for two days with a broken jaw, a cracked skull and nasal cavity injuries. He still has headaches and memory problems but was finally able to return to work earlier this month. Hundreds gathered in November for a fundraiser at the restaurant where he works, Joanie's Pizza, but he still doesn't know how he'll pay the medical bills.

"I don't remember much of what happened," Quain said. "I was hanging out with a friend, celebrating the Cardinals in the World Series. I went to the store and saw a group of kids who looked out of place, suspicious, but I shrugged it off. I got around to the library, and the next thing I remember is waking up on the corner with the mayor standing next to me. I tried to say 'hi' but my jaw was broken."

It isn't clear how long Knockout King has been around, nor is the exact number of attacks known. The FBI doesn't track it separately, but Slay said he has heard from several mayors about similar attacks and criminologists agree versions of the game are going on in many places.

St. Louis Police Chief Dan Isom said the city has had about 10 Knockout King attacks over the past 15 months.

Experts say it is a grab for attention.

"We know that juveniles don't think out consequences clearly," said Beth Huebner, an associate professor of criminology at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. "They see something on YouTube and say, 'I want to get that sort of attention, too.' They don't think about the person they're attacking maybe hitting their head."

Scott Decker, a criminologist at Arizona State, said the attacks are a modern extension of gang-like behavior ? instead of painting over another gang's graffiti as a show of toughness, they beat someone up and post a video on social media sites. The postings spur copycat crimes.

"It's adolescent and early adults, largely male, showing how tough they are. It's done to show off," Decker said.

Earlier this year in Chicago, a group of teens followed an elderly homeless man at a train station. One of the teens walked up to him and punched him in the face, knocking him out as the teen's friends laughed and mocked the man. The exchange was captured on video and posted on a hip-hop site, where it got about a quarter of a million views within two days. The teen was not arrested because police couldn't locate the homeless man to see if he wanted to press charges.

The crimes aren't limited to big cities. In 2009, Adam Taylor had just entered a parking garage in Columbia, Mo. Surveillance footage from the garage showed a group of teens following him. One of the teens attacked, punching Taylor and sending him crashing into a brick wall. A few seconds later, the others joined in, punching and kicking him as he lay on the ground. Taylor suffered bruising on the brain, whiplash and internal bleeding but survived.

Hoang Nguyen wasn't as fortunate.

The 72-year-old retired schoolteacher immigrated to St. Louis from Vietnam with his wife less than four years earlier to be near their daughter. The couple was returning to their apartment after walking to a grocery store on an April morning in broad daylight.

They took a shortcut through an alley, where they saw a group of young people approaching. Suddenly, one of them charged. Hoang was attacked as he stepped in front of his wife to protect her. The attack went on as he begged for mercy, she told police.

Hoang died of massive injuries. Elex Murphy, 18, was charged with first-degree murder and allegedly told police the attack was part of the Knockout King game. His attorney declined to comment.

St. Louis authorities are going to the source to combat further attacks. A special police squad has been assigned to focus on Knockout King, and a city prosecutor is designated for the attacks. But Isom said equally important is an outreach effort to talk to students.

"Certainly we take this very seriously and we're making every effort to stop it," Isom said.

Steve Jobs on Gaming: It's the future of Learning [video]

By John Brownlee (10:46 am, Dec 22)

This video of Steve Jobs from 1990 is an interesting artifact for a couple of reasons.

For one thing, it?s the clip in which Steve pioneered his famous ?bicycle for the mind? analogy, which I?ve always felt is one of the most beautiful things ever said about computers.

What is also interesting, though, is how gung ho Steve Jobs is about video games in this clip, even going as far as to suggest that video games are the future of learning, and even the future of the Library of Congress.

What?s odd about this is that both Steve Jobs and Apple were fairly hostile to gaming on the Mac and even iOS until the iPod touch and the App Store showed them how lucrative it could be. Now iOS is the biggest handheld gaming platform in the world, but it wasn?t always that way, and Apple for years could literally have not given two figs for gaming.

In light of this, Steve Jobs?s perspective on gaming makes a lot more sense after watching this clip. He sees interactive simulation to be a key to learning, but not shooting aliens on Strogos. As such, the iPad is really the complete fulfillment of his dream for the computer as a gaming platform, isn?t it?

Pollution fighters sue Kennecott over mining dust (AP)

SALT LAKE CITY ? Clean air groups are making good on a promise to sue Kennecott Utah Copper over air pollution.

The groups say Kennecott is kicking up too much dust at its Bingham copper mine and should curtail operations.

They say Kennecott is violating the federal Clean Air Act even though Utah's pollution regulators have allowed the company to significantly ramp up mining production.

The federal lawsuit was filed Monday by Utah Moms for Clean Air, Utah Physicians for a Healthy Environment and WildEarth Guardians.

Kennecott says the groups' claims are without merit and that it isn't violating pollution standards.

The Utah doctors say Kennecott is responsible for a third of the air pollution throughout Salt Lake valley, which was rated moderate on Monday. That rating means sensitive people shouldn't exercise vigorously outdoors.

Strike might force Arsenal and Chelsea to postpone

updated 7:04 a.m. ET Dec. 20, 2011

LONDON - Arsenal and Chelsea might be forced to postpone their Premier League matches set for Monday because of a strike by London transport workers.

Arsenal is scheduled to host Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Chelsea is at home against Fulham, but thousands of fans could struggle to reach the stadiums because of a planned strike by London Underground train drivers.

While most top European leagues take a winter break, the Dec. 26 schedule is a traditional highlight of the English season for many fans.

Moody's downgrades Belgium's debt by 2 notches (AP)

NEW YORK ? Moody's Investors Services on Friday downgraded Belgium's credit rating by two notches, citing strains on eurozone countries as they try to finance their heavy debt loads amid the regional financial crisis.

The ratings agency cut Belgium's local- and foreign-currency government bond ratings to "Aa3" from Aa1," with a negative outlook. The ratings remain investment grade.

Moody's said the downgrade comes as soaring borrowing costs strain the finances of heavily indebted countries that use the euro, like Belgium. The strains are also making it difficult for Belgium to reduce debt and rein in spending.

Other factors included the impact the crisis is having on Belgium's economic growth, and concerns about the small nation's banking sector.

Moody's earlier this week said the debt of the euro area countries is under pressure, because of the uncertainty surrounding efforts to solve the region's debt crisis. The agency has said it is reviewing its ratings on France's debt, and downgraded Hungary late last month. It already rates the bonds of Greece, Ireland and Portugal as "junk."

It downgrading Belgium, Moody's said higher costs for financing public borrowing could "significantly complicate" efforts to reduce the country's overall level of debt. In addition, there is an increased probability ? although it is still low ? that further turmoil could result in the inability to sell bonds.

The ratings agency is also concerned about the ability for the "small and very open Belgian economy" to grow, particularly as the rest of Europe aims to reduce debt by putting strict austerity measures into place. Belgium may find it necessary to further cut spending beyond the roughly euro11 billion to euro16 billion cuts planned, which would further weigh on economic growth.

Moody's pointed to Belgium's recent political trouble as another concern in addressing its economic problems.

Elio Di Rupo took the oath as Belgium's prime minister on Dec. 6, ending 541 days under a caretaker government that resulted from impasse among negotiators trying to bridge the divide between the country's linguistic groups.

"Belgium's recent experience of political bargaining indicates that consensus on additional measures can be difficult to achieve," Moody's said.

Finally, Moody's raised the issue of Belgium's banking sector. The ratings agency is concerned that the continued dismantling of Dexia Credit Local could further increase debt. In October, the Dexia Bank Belgium unit was nationalized at a cost of euro4 billion. That move increased Belgium's exposure to the rest of the banking group. Combined, Moody's estimated that exposure to be close to 10 percent of the nation's gross domestic product.

Earlier Friday, Fitch Ratings said it was considering further cuts to the credit scores of Belgium and five other eurozone nations.

Sony Tablet S update lets you play with PS3 controllers, cable adapter required

We've got some good news for gamers that were willing to plunge into the PlayStation-certified world of Sony's tablets. The latest update to the company's divisive Tablet S will let you connect your PS3 controllers with those 32-bit games of yesteryear. The update is available now in Sony's homeland of Japan and the company is also rewarding its tablet faithful with a free download; an Ape Escape-themed mini-game collection. It's not all good news, however. The clamshelled Tablet P doesn't get the controller hook-up and you'll need to buy an additional USB adapter cable to connect a controller to the monoscreened Tablet S. A briefly worded, vaguely translated release awaits after the break.

Update: We've heard from Japanese users that you'll only need to the cable to initially pair the controller with the tablet. After that, you're free to wirelessly play away.

Choosing the Right Wedding Dress ? What ?David? Won?t Tell You

I, therefore, have an experienced eye and feel qualified to give some good adviceAs a wedding planner, I have spoken to thousands of brides and witnessed, at close hand, at least a thousand in their wedding dresses As a photographer, I have closely studied the bride?s photographic images in print Every bride I have seen is beautiful, but not every bride?s dress suits herI know many brides go out shopping for the perfect wedding dress within days and even hours of the proposal Some go even before the proposal Some wedding dresses are a definite detriment to the bride?s appearance, the pictures and even the whole wedding Almost every bride I talk to discusses her dress I know that the choosing of the right wedding dress is very important Let these three principles guide you:So brides, I want to offer you some criteria for picking the right dress1) YOU LOVE IT AND WILL LOVE IT ON YOUR WEDDING DAY? You will be the one looking at your wedding pictures for the rest of your lifeAbove all else, you need to feel beautiful and comfortable Don?t let your mother, sister, bridesmaid, shop clerk, Goth teenage cousin, or even your groom decide So, how will YOU decide what the best dress for you is? This is YOUR day, and you need to trust your own taste and style You will be the one walking down the aisle ? the ?Star of the Runway2) MAKE SURE IT IS COMFORTABLE AND FITS YOU You might not, or you could lose even moreDon?t buy your dress a year in advance ? your taste or your shape might change during that time Don?t buy your dress to fit after you have lost twenty pounds In either case, it won?t fit They are often poorly fitted, badly sewn, and made of cheap, synthetic materialDefinitely enjoy browsing wedding magazines, but keep in mind your own budget, taste and figure Too many of those dresses in magazines can actually only be worn by the anorexic thirteen-year-olds modeling them They might look alright on the mannequin in the shop, but they won?t look good on you in natural light Also beware of knock-offs or imitations of expensive wedding dresses in a magazine If they appear at home or in the shop, you can be sure that they will at the weddingPoorly made dresses often fall down, are too tight in some places and too baggy in others, with crooked seams and zippers that show The bride is continually pulling and wrestling with her dress throughout the wedding and reception Much too often, the bride?s underwear shows A proper fit cannot be over estimated It?s alright to buy an inexpensive dress, but, make sure it looks good in natural light ? natural fibers such as silk or cotton are preferred Walk around in the dress, sit down and move and check bra straps and panty lines Make sure you have the right underwear to go with the dress, that can?t be seen If necessary, you can have your dress altered by a good seamstress And, allow enough time for delays and fittingsYou might want to consider having the seamstress make your dress from scratch This way, you can have total control over the style and fabric and be sure of a perfect fit It is a wonderful feeling of power and creativity to design your own wedding dress, if you are so inclined, and it doesn?t have to be more expensive than buying off the rack Make sure to get an accurate estimate of the price of the dress and labor before the seamstress starts sewing, so there will be no unpleasant surprises Some of our brides wait until they come to Hawaii and find real treasures that fit perfectly in one of the local shopsAnother option is to browse small boutiques Some of the most lovely wedding dresses I have seen were not wedding dresses at all, just great dresses, usually white but not always They are also perfect for a Hawaiian wedding, which brings me to my last criteria It is amazing what you can find when you venture away from the wedding dress department or shop3) MAKE SURE YOUR DRESS IS APPROPRIATE FOR THE PLACE AND CLIMATE WHERE YOUR WEDDING WILL TAKE PLACEEven if you love your dress, and it fits and it looks great in your bedroom mirror, there could be a problem on your wedding day You may think that your bridesmaid will carry the train, but do you truly want her trailing after you, always in your pictures, as you try to stroll on the sand, romantically, with your groom? Brides often come back from the beach with their train, heavy with sand and waterThese are some problems I have seen: A bride buys a beautiful but elaborate and heavy dress for a tropical beach wedding The result is misery ? red, flushed, sweaty skin, heat stroke and even fainting! Another common problem is veils and trains worn for outside weddings Unless you want to participate in the Trash the Dress fad, this is not recommended Trains drag in the dirt and sand, catch on twigs, and inhibit free movement in an outdoors wedding Some can be removed or clipped to the dress for easy movementAnd, Veils ? Now they can cause a spectacle on a windy day The veil becomes a kite or parachute I swear, I have seen brides nearly pulled away from their groom by a six foot veil unfurling in the wind I have, actually, witnessed four or five people trying unsuccessfully to figure out how to pin-up the train You don?t want to do a ?Mary Poppins? on your wedding day The same goes for trains If in doubt, make sure your veil can be easily removed, if necessary At the very least, the flying veils end up destroying hairdos, blowing in the groom?s face and being a general nuisance But, make sure you test these apparatus before purchasing Is the church or event room hot or cold? Don?t overdress or under dressOr, perhaps, you are going to have your wedding in a church Veils and trains won?t be a problem, but still consider temperature If you?re planning a winter wedding, or your venue is overly air conditioned, make sure an appropriate shawl or jacket is part of your wedding outfit, or wear a long-sleeved wedding dress? So, even if you don?t pick the right dress, don?t let it ruin your wedding dayBlue ?chicken skin,? is not much more attractive than red, sweaty skin Neither is teeth chattering Think about that sweet guy who is pledging to love you for the rest of your life and be merry You want to be comfortable, because you want that smile on your beautiful face to be real, not forced Your smile and joy and love are your most beautiful ?apparel Mahalo! If you want to know more about how to go about planning a Hawaii or a Maui Wedding, please contact Rev Ayesha Sandra Lee from Merry Maui Weddings & Vacations, at (888)588-0400?2008 Ayesha Sandra Lee & Merry Maui Weddings ? Romney raises doubts about Gingrich in S.Carolina (Reuters)

CHARLESTON, South Carolina (Reuters) ? Republican White House hopeful Mitt Romney sought to create doubts about rival Newt Gingrich among South Carolina conservatives on Saturday by criticizing his high-paid work for mortgage giant Freddie Mac.

Romney, on a two-day tour of South Carolina to try to dent Gingrich's big lead in the polls here, all but accused Gingrich of lobbying for Freddie Mac by accepting $1.6 million in consultants' fees from an enterprise at the heart of America's housing crisis.

Gingrich has nurtured South Carolina's Tea Party conservatives to try to secure the state that holds the first primary in the South on January 21 and the third overall contest in the race to determine a candidate to face Democratic President Barack Obama next November.

Romney pointed out to reporters that Gingrich had at first said he made $300,000 from Freddie Mac over an extended period and that only later was it revealed that he had earned $1.6 million from the government-sponsored business.

"I think as Tea Partiers concentrate on that for instance they'll say, 'Wow this really isn't the guy that represents our views," Romney said. "I think the Tea Party is anxious to have people who are outside Washington come in and change Washington, as opposed to people who have stayed in Washington for 30 or 40 years."

Gingrich's rivals are attempting to use Gingrich's work for Freddie Mac as an indictment of the former speaker of the House of Representatives, saying he reflects a Washington insider culture that needs to be changed.

Asked if he thought Gingrich's work for Freddie Mac amounted to lobbying, Romney replied: "I'm going to let the lawyers decide what is and what isn't lobbying, but if it walks like a duck and it quacks like a duck, typically it's a duck."

Gingrich has denied acting as a lobbyist for Freddie Mac.

In a conference call with reporters, Gingrich pushed back against a Wall Street Journal editorial that focused on his Freddie Mac ties and said he "did not in any way work in influence, per se."

"That's an area where people have said things that are wildly inaccurate," Gingrich said.

Romney is touring South Carolina with the state's Republican governor, Nikki Haley, hoping her endorsement this week will help him curry favor with Tea Party conservatives who have long held doubts about whether Romney is true to their principles.

He said he believes he is the ideal candidate for the Tea Party movement.

"I recognize that the speaker has a big lead here," Romney said of Gingrich. "But I think as people take a closer and closer look, they'll recognize that I reflect more effectively the positions which they hold on key issues."

Later, at a town hall meeting in Myrtle Beach, Romney managed to get a jab in at Gingrich in answer to a question about global warming, which some conservatives do not believe is real.

"I'm not planning on cutting an ad with Nancy Pelosi," he said, referring to an ad Gingrich taped in 2008 with liberal Democratic Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi to say climate change needed to be addressed.

Romney said he believed humans contribute to global warming but did not know how much. He acknowledged Gingrich has said the ad was a mistake.

Romney attempted to convince South Carolina's military community to side with him, a strategy that Senator John McCain had used to great effect in 2008 in winning the state's primary and going on to win the Republican presidential nomination.

South Carolina is home to eight military bases that provide jobs for thousands of military and civilian personnel. Thousands of retired military veterans are in the state as well.

Romney vowed to build up the U.S. military if elected in place of Obama.

"I want to have a military so strong that no one would ever think of testing it," he said to loud applause at a town hall event hosted by Republican Congressman Tim Scott.

Europe debt woes prompt year-end flight from risk (Reuters)

SINGAPORE (Reuters) ? Asian shares fell into bear market territory for the year and commodities and the euro nursed stinging losses on Thursday, after fears that Europe's debt crisis is still worsening prompted investors to dump riskier assets and huddle in the safety of the dollar and Treasuries.

The gloomy mood was not improved by a private sector survey indicating China's factory output shrinking again in December, adding to the headwinds facing a global economy struggling with sluggish U.S. growth and the euro zone sliding back into recession.

"We're quite bearish about the world at the moment," said Damien Boey, equity strategist at Credit Suisse in Sydney. "You're looking at basically the three major economies in the world causing problems."

The market view that a European Union summit last week had failed to produce a solution to the crisis was reinforced when Italy was forced to pay an eye-watering 6.47 percent on 5-year bonds on Wednesday, a record borrowing cost for the euro era.

Japan's Nikkei fell 1.3 percent and MSCI's broadest index of Asia Pacific shares outside Japan (.MIAPJ0000PUS) was down 1.8 percent, following losses of around 1 percent on Wall Street and a steeper sell-off in Europe. (.T) (.N) (.EU) (.L)

The MSCI Asia ex-Japan is down 20 percent for 2011 -- the rule-of-thumb definition of a bear market -- while the Nikkei has lost about 17.5 percent. Both have underperformed global equities (.MIWD00000PUS), which have lost around 12.5 percent, and U.S. stocks (.SPX), which are only down around 3.5 percent.

Europe remains investors' biggest worry, with markets still braced for ratings agency downgrades of euro zone sovereigns.

"Markets are frustrated and disappointed, waiting for a road map on the resolution of the two-year-old debt crisis," said Ong Yi Ling, an investment analyst at Phillip Futures in Singapore. "Risk assets are all down. The debt crisis will be with us at least through the first half of 2012."

Equity losses in Hong Kong (.HSI) and Shanghai (.SSEC) deepened after the release of HSBC's China flash PMI, the latest piece of data to show the world's second largest economy losing steam, but reaction in broader markets was muted.

COMMODITY SLIDE

Wednesday's stock market declines were dwarfed by carnage in commodity markets, where oil, gold and copper shed 4-5 percent.

Gold has been hammered in recent days as fund managers liquidate their holdings, either to cover losses elsewhere or to lock in profits on an asset that is still up more than 10 percent for the year.

"Some macro hedge funds are liquidating gold holdings and taking profits in a difficult year," said James Steel, chief technical analyst at HSBC.

The precious metal edged down a little further on Thursday to around $1,572 an ounce, while U.S. crude oil inched up to $95.20 a barrel and Brent crude bounced more than 50 cents to around $105.60.

The euro fell as low as $1.2944, its weakest level since January 11, and was later steady around $1.2990.

A downgrade by ratings agency Fitch of five major European financial groups, including France's Credit Agricole to A-plus from AA-negative, added to the already euro-negative sentiment.

This comes on top of the prospect of further cuts by rival Standard & Poor's, which warned earlier this month it could downgrade the ratings of 15 of the 17 euro zone members.

"I can see the U.S. dollar keep trending higher while the euro flounders," said Joseph Capurso, a strategist at Commonwealth Bank of Australia.
