Afghan boxer overcomes odds despite defeat
Ajmal Faisal, Afghanistan's sole boxer at the Olympics, said just getting to London for the Games had been a triumph after he lost in the first round here on Monday.
The 21-year-old was well beaten 22-9 by experienced French flyweight Nordine Oubaali but said opposition from Taliban insurgents and a dearth of facilities in Afghanistan had severely hampered his ability to train.
"I lived outside Kabul, but I couldn't train sometimes because there is a lot of opposition within the Taliban and other political parties that actually oppose us training," he said.
"We are not allowed to train as freely as we would like to."
Faisal, well-backed by a crowd who chanted his name throughout and cheered every time he landed a punch, said he received virtually no aid at all.
"There are not enough facilities and I have to pay for my own equipment and training, it costs me 80 to 90 Afghani rupees per session to train."
Faisal, who improved as the bout wore on and pummelled Oubaali with a couple of beautiful combinations in the final round, said his dream of competing at the Games had been salvaged by a training camp provided by amateur boxing's governing body, the AIBA.
"The training that was held in Cardiff for two months enabled me to compete and last for three rounds against a very tough opponent," he said.
Oubaali, who was a world bronze light-flyweight medallist in 2007, said he had not dared to drop his frenetic pace throughout the clash.
"It was a very physical fight, sometimes I was afraid the way he lowered his head he would cut me," said the 25-year-old.
"He boxed like he had nothing to lose and that is why I didn't dare allow myself to take a breather throughout the bout.
"To do that can be fatal as it allows them (the opponent) to believe they can win and all they need is a lucky punch."

Olympics ceremony album tops download charts
LONDON (AP) ? Enjoyed the music-packed Olympics opening ceremony? Now you can buy the album ? and thousands have.
The soundtrack album, which went on sale as a download minutes after Friday's ceremony ended, has topped the iTunes album chart in Britain, France, Belgium and Spain, and has reached No. 5 in the United States.
It's No. 5 on the overall British album chart less than two days after its release.
Director Danny Boyle's spectacular opening ceremony was a rollicking celebration of British music. The album includes tracks from ? among others ? David Bowie, The Pet Shop Boys, Chemical Brothers, Dizzee Rascal, Emeli Sande, Arctic Monkeys and Underworld.
Universal Music will also release an album of the London Olympics' Aug. 12 closing ceremony, which will feature British acts including The Who.

A real estate deal that's not quite par ? ? Rankin RealtyRankin Realty
Amherst residents may become the new owners of the Westwood Country Club and its 18-hole golf course.
And the town may relinquish ownership of the Audubon Golf Course so developers can start a construction project that would redefine the commercial landscape of Amherst.
The owners of the 170-acre Westwood Country Club are proposing an acre-for-acre swap of their club and golf course between Sheridan Drive and Maple Road for the municipal Audubon Golf Course across the street. A formal letter outlining their proposal is expected to be submitted to the town Wednesday.
Developer Andrew J. Shaevel, managing partner with Mensch Capital Partners, said he recognizes that the unusual proposal will take time to develop and will require input from the community, but he?s hoping an agreement can be reached by the end of next year.
?It?s a unique proposition that exists today, if we can make the exchange work,? he said.
Some town leaders have expressed cautious interest. Supervisor Barry Weinstein said he?s had several private talks with would-be and current owners of the country club since the fall.
?Everything?s in play,? he said.
Mensch Capital Partners purchased Westwood in March when the country club was on the verge of bankruptcy. The development group, created for the purpose of acquiring the Westwood property, comprises several partners representing Essjay Partners, Ciminelli Real Estate Corp. and the Hamister Group.
The country club continues to operate as a private membership club. But club managers recently informed Mensch Capital that they were terminating their lease to run the golf club and clubhouse as of Dec. 31.
That spurred the club owners to act, Shaevel said.
Under Mensch Capital Partners proposal:
* The town would give up and rezone 170 acres of the roughly 220 acres that make up the 18-hole Audubon Golf Course and driving range, and petition the state for the alienation of park land.
* The developer would transfer the Westwood Country Club property to the town as a ?turn-key operation.? Aside from the golf course, that property includes a clubhouse, pro shop, pool, tennis courts and driving range. The country club parcel connects to the town?s Audubon Par 3 golf course on the south side of Maple Road.
* Mensch Capital Partners would develop the Audubon property as a mixed-use project facing Millersport Highway.
The initial concept is expected to include multifamily residential housing, such as townhouses, senior and assisted-living housing; ?light retail? development; professional office space; a hotel; and restaurants.
?While we?re in the really early stages of this project, we?ve hired a master planner for this site,? Shaevel said.
Jay Valgora, an urban planner, architect and design expert based in New York City, has worked on projects around the world, but he has Hamburg roots and agreed to be part of the project, Shaevel said.
Though Valgora has helped develop a preliminary concept plan for the Audubon site, Shaevel said his development team will embark on a ?listening tour? to gather feedback and input from residents, UB and town representatives in the coming months to shape a final design proposal.
That?s understandable, given the controversy and failure of Benderson Development to execute its own mixed-use proposal for the much smaller, neighboring gun club property after three years of effort and investment.
Benderson ultimately sold the former Buffalo Shooting Club, just west of Audubon on Maple Road, to American Campus Communities for $10.5 million in May. Specific plans for that 34-acre site have not yet been submitted by the student housing corporation.
The Mensch Capital proposal for the Audubon site is much larger in scale.
It could receive support from town golfers looking for a better playing experience than the town currently provides.
Some town officials are also attracted to the town?s ability to upgrade and consolidate its recreational assets, grow its golf course income and gain more long-term property-tax revenue, through the private development of Audubon.
The project ?could be one of the best things that ever happened to this town,? according to Council Member Mark Manna, who spoke with developer and partner Paul Ciminelli about the land-swap deal.
Though he was against Benderson?s Amherst Town Centre project because of neighborhood opposition, Manna said the fact that this project will face Millersport Highway makes a big difference.
?I don?t see how anyone loses if this come through,? he said. ?This town needs smart growth.?
Others, however, are likely to raise issues related to the loss of green space, as well as environmental impact and traffic concerns. While main traffic access will be via Millersport Highway, Shaevel said, access points along Maple Road will be necessary.
Roughly 250 acres on the southeast side of the University at Buffalo have remained relatively undeveloped for decades, but with UB?s expansion plans, the Audubon Golf Course and adjacent land have become a target for developers.
The town has owned the Audubon Golf Course since the 1960s, but it has struggled with the course?s operating losses in recent years. Westwood has also faced serious financial difficulties.
But since Westwood was taken over by Mensch Capital Partners and managed by Jon Cohen and Todd Sugarman of Culinary Productions, the entire golf course operation has been revitalized and now boasts a waiting list of people wanting to join the club, Shaevel said.
Had Sugarman and Cohen not announced their intention to terminate their golf club lease agreement by December of next year, the existing arrangement may have continued, Shaevel said.
Instead, club owners were motivated to explore a land-swap option that?s been circulating as an idea for years. Weinstein said Sugarman and Cohen first approached him in the fall with the concept when it initially appeared that they might become the new owners of Westwood.
Shaevel said Mensch Capital?s proposal would extend the bike path into the Audubon property and would more fully connect UB?s North Campus to the rest of the town. That?s a concept supported by both the UB 2020 strategic plan and by the town?s own comprehensive plan, he said.
If no land-swap arrangement is reached, however, Mensch Capital Partners still has other options for the Westwood property.
Those options include renegotiating with Culinary Productions for ongoing management of the course, bringing in another golf course operator or creating a new development plan for the property, Shaevel said.
Council member Guy Marlette said the town needs to consider and evaluate the land-swap proposal, especially since the possibility exists under Westwood?s ?community-facility? zoning designation that the country club could be redeveloped into something else.
?I think by not talking to them and not entering into conversation, that?s a bad move,? Marlette said. ?That?s short-sighted.?
Weinstein said he?ll consider the Westwood proposal, but only if the developers recognize that the per-acre value of the Audubon property is greater than the per-acre value of the Westwood property. While Westwood is considered the better golf course, Audubon offers a far better location for mixed-use development, he said.
Any land swap deal should include payment to the town for the difference between the worth of the Westwood parcel and the worth of the Audubon parcel, he said.
?We?ll see how realistic and how reasonable these people are,? Weinstein said.
Shaevel responded that an appraisal of both properties is necessary before terms can be reached.

I can't help but wonder if the name discourages tenants from locating there, and whether that in turn means it commands lower rents than it otherwise might.
It would be hard to know--if one ran a hedonic regression, there would not be sufficient degrees of freedom to determine whether the name mattered or not.

Man charged with manslaughter in Florida butt-injection case
ORLANDO, Florida (Reuters) - A man who injected a woman in the buttocks with unknown substances during an illegal cosmetic surgery was arrested on Thursday and charged with manslaughter in the woman's death, authorities said.
Oneal Ron Morris, 31, of Hollywood, Florida, is known to have injected other women with substances such as bathroom caulk, cement, Super Glue and the tire product Fix-A-Flat, officials with the Broward County Sheriff's Office said.
Authorities described Morris as a transvestite who went by the nickname "The Dutchess."
According to his arrest affidavit, 31-year-old Shatarka Nuby died in March in Tallahassee from what an assistant medical examiner called "massive systemic silicone migration" due to "cosmetic silicone injections of the buttocks and hips," according to the arrest affidavit.
She died months after her last injection by Morris. Before her death, Nuby told a Florida Department of Health investigator that she paid Morris at least $2,000 for about 10 treatments between 2007 and 2011 to enhance her buttocks, hips, thighs and breasts, according to the affidavit and a sheriff's report.
Morris once told Nuby's aunt that he was injecting her with silicone from Home Depot, the affidavit said. Morris made house calls for the injections and would seal the injection sites with cotton balls and Super Glue, Nuby's aunt told investigators.
Neither Morris, who remained in custody in Broward County Jail, nor a representative for him could be reached for comment on Thursday evening. He is awaiting trial on previous charges of practicing medicine without a license and causing injury.
Nuby's death in March occurred at Tallahassee Federal Correctional Institute where, according to CBS Miami, she was serving a 2-1/2 year sentence for identity theft, which she resorted to in order to pay for breast implants and liposuction.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Coke and Pepsi are chasing after the sweet spot: a soda with no calories, no artificial sweeteners and no funny aftertaste.
The world's top soft drink companies hope that's the elusive trifecta that will silence health concerns about soda and reverse the decline in consumption of carbonated drinks. But such a formula could be years away.
That's because the ingredient that makes soda taste good is also what packs on the pounds: high-fructose corn syrup. Artificial sweeteners like asparatame that are used in diet drinks don't have any calories but are seen as processed and fake. Natural sweeteners that come from plants present the most promising alternative, but companies haven't yet figured out how to mask their metallic aftertaste.
Despite the complexities, soft drink makers push on in their search.
"I can't say when it will be here, but it's in the reasonable future," said Al Carey, who heads the beverage unit for the Americas at PepsiCo Inc., the world's No. 2 soda maker.
There's good reason that soft drink makers are so eager to tweak their formulas. Once a beloved American treat, sodas are now being blamed for the nation's bulging waistlines ? two-thirds of the country's adults are overweight or obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That, coupled with the growing variety of flavored waters and sports drinks, has sent per capita soda consumption down 17 percent to about 1.3 cans a day since its peak in 1998, according to Beverage Digest, an industry tracker.
In New York City, a ban on the sale of sugary drinks bigger than 16 ounces in restaurants, theaters and stadiums could take effect as early as March. The mayor of Cambridge, Mass., proposed a similar ban last month. And in Richmond, Calif., voters will decide in November whether to pass the nation's first penny-per-ounce tax on soda and other sugary drinks such as fruit juices and teas.
All the negative publicity has some once-faithful soda drinkers cutting back. Krista Koster, a 29-year-old who lives in Washington D.C., used to down about two cans of soda a day. Now she's trying to kick the habit and be more conscious about what she drinks.
"I've just been hearing how bad soda is," said Koster, who works in public relations. "You start considering a lot of the ingredients, whether it's fake sugar or the real sugar."
High-fructose corn syrup, the cheap sweetener that's used in most sodas, has the same nutritional value and taste of sugar. A can of regular soda typically has about 40 grams of high-fructose corn syrup and 140 calories. By comparison, the same amount of apple juice has about 38 grams of sugar and 165 calories, but companies can tout the vitamins and other nutrients juice provides.
Aspartame, the artificial sweetener commonly used in drinks such as Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi, doesn't have any calories. But some drinkers worry about the fact that the sweeteners are not naturally occurring in nature. Public perception has been colored by past studies that have suggested it caused cancer and brain tumors in rats even though The American Cancer Society says there's no evidence showing it has any link with an increased risk for cancer in adults.
The concerns have led soft drink companies to search for natural, zero-calorie sweeteners, including stevia, which is derived from a South American shrub. Natural sweeteners have neither the calories of sugar nor the negative associations of artificial sweeteners. The trick, however, is figuring out how to make them taste good in colas.
"Every sweetener has its own notes that need to be mixed with other flavors," said Mehmood Khan, chief science officer for PepsiCo. "It's a bit like an orchestra playing music, as opposed to one instrument."
So far, stevia is the natural sweetener that has gotten the most attention and is already used in Coca-Cola and PepsiCo products, including orange juice and bottled teas. But it's proving more difficult to hide the aftertaste in colas.
Soft drink makers are testing different extracts from the stevia plant that they hope will be easier to blend. They're also scouring the world for other naturally occurring sweeteners, such as one called mogroside that is extracted from monk fruit and a derivative of a berry called miracle fruit.
Coca-Cola, based in Atlanta, says it's currently testing additional drinks that use stevia and other natural sweeteners but declined to give details. The tests are part of the ongoing "home-use tests" the company conducts, in which consumers may be given a six-pack of a new product to try over the course of a week.
To accelerate the pace of such trials, Coca-Cola two years ago dedicated a production line at one of its plants solely to churning out test beverages. But taste isn't the only consideration for the world's biggest soda maker.
"Some of the very exciting (sweeteners) we're playing with are really small in terms of production and planting, and they need to be nurtured," says Katie Bayne, president of Coca-Cola's North American soda business.
Coca-Cola also is testing versions of its Sprite and Fanta that use stevia in Atlanta, Detroit, Louisville, Ky. and Memphis, Tenn. The drinks have about half the calories of regular Sprite and Fanta (70 per can, instead of 140 or 160, respectively). But the "Select" drinks fall short of the ideal because they have high-fructose corn syrup.
PepsiCo, based in Purchase, N.Y., is also on the hunt for new drinks that use natural, no-calorie sweeteners. In 2010, the company entered a $62 million, four-year deal with food flavor company Senomyx Inc. to develop natural sweeteners and "taste enhancers" that can intensify sweetness. Coca-Cola also previously had an eight-year contract with Senomyx; neither of the partnerships has yet produced any products for commercial use.
Dr Pepper Snapple Group, the nation's third-largest soda maker, also is searching for the right combination. The company's line of flavored sodas, such as Sunkist and A&W Root Beer, may make it easier to mask the taste of natural sweeteners like stevia than with colas.
At a beverage industry conference earlier this year, Dr Pepper's Chief Financial Officer Marty Ellen said he thinks a "sweetener breakthrough" is achievable in the next few years.
Recreating the exact taste of extremely valuable brands such as Coke and Pepsi is a high-stakes game and companies don't want to rush any drinks to the market. But making a natural cola that doesn't have any calories isn't impossible. Smaller companies such as Zevia, based in Culver City, Calif., already make such colas using stevia.
Zevia is now sold in 10,500 locations ? including Kroger and Whole Foods ? up from just 850 locations four years ago. CEO Paddy Spence doesn't think Coke and Pepsi's efforts to come up with their own zero-calorie drinks will threaten his company.
"When consumers see a brand all of a sudden with different positioning, they see right through that," Spence said. "They'll say 'you're a sugar soda company that has a couple different stevia products.'"
Still, considering their enormous resources, it's likely that soda companies will eventually find a way to make natural drinks with no calories that taste good, says Mike Jacobson of the Center for Science in the Public Interest.
"If you look 10 years ahead, we're going to see a different marketplace for sodas," he said.

My July 23 Modern Parenthood blog on the NCAA ruling prompted a left-field response that blew my mind and prompts me to think more about the families of criminals.
In the blog, I lashed out at those at Penn State who knew about former coach Jerry Sandusky's acts as a pedophile and sex offender. And instantly, I was targeted by members of a Missouri community who linked a sex offender there with a donor to my children's chess charity. Suddenly my chess blog and YouTube videos ? part of the nonprofit organization Norfolk Initiative for Chess Excellence (NICE) ? were slammed with outraged comments revealing that a donor to the nonprofit is a sex offender.
It was all news to me.
My best guess on how this connection was made is that people who were aware of the man?s convictions tended to look for stories slamming pedophiles and sex offenders, and it wasn?t a big leap from my Monitor blog to my chess blog and videos, which are prominently featured in the donor?s home state of Missouri where he sold brightly colored and patterned chess boards for children.
While most people might not think of chess as a child's playground, more than half of the 45 million Americans who play chess are children playing in schools and community centers. The Glos company, which donated the chessboards to my organization, was trying to strike deals with major school systems as well as the Boy Scouts which created a chess merit badge last August. So this is a very big deal to this little company.
I have never met James C. Walker in person, nor his wife Laura. It is she who owns and operates Glos Games, while he designed boards and did marketing and sales. I am told he no longer has any contact with the company.
After a series of phone calls a year ago, Laura and I became friends. Jimmy and his larger-than-life persona over the phone irritated me so badly that I just stopped dealing with him, except on rare occasions when Laura wasn't available.
