IN THE NEWS: CHRISTMAS-DAY SHOPPING ON THE RISE

NEW YORK (AP) -- So much for Christmas being a time to spend with

family and friends, relaxing under the glow of a lighted tree. A

growing number of people spent the day near a glow, all right -- but

it was the glow of their computer, laptop, tablet or smartphone

screen -- searching out bargains. IBM finds that online shopping

jumped 16.4 percent on Christmas Day, compared to last year. And

the IBM report says the dollar amount of those purchases made using

mobile devices was up a whopping 173 percent. And the trend seems

to have continued into the day after Christmas. Yesterday

afternoon, shopping was up 10 percent over the same day last year.

IN THE NEWS: WOMAN USES FACEBOOK FOR HELP AFTER BEING TAKEN HOSTAGE

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Police in Utah say a woman turned to

Facebook to get help after she and her toddler son were held

hostage for nearly five days. Authorities say the woman hid in a

closet with a laptop to post a plea for help on the social

networking web site. The woman alerted people that she and her

17-month-old son would be "dead by morning" if someone didn't

help. Someone did -- the post prompted calls to police who went to

the home to check on the woman. Police arrested a man and have

booked him for investigation of aggravated kidnapping, forcible

sodomy, aggravated assault, domestic violence, child abuse, animal

cruelty and other charges.
